Spend a day not in nature or on the ski slopes? The Bavarian Forest offers you, with its location in the heart of Europe, much more than that. Everywhere you can experience the history, the old prosperity of various peoples, the blending of Western and Eastern European cultures in a society that is modern, progressive and innovative. Yet, as everywhere in Bavaria, traditions are valued highly and you enjoy all the beauty and fun that this region has to offer.
Ancient culture include the cities of Passau (with a blend of Italian architecture, only 35
minutes), Deggendorf (45 minutes) and Regensburg (100 minutes). You can get lost of your
heart in the old inner cities with many historical buildings, sites, castles and museums of very different
nature. Also for your children, there is, whatever the age they have, always something fun or interesting to see
A little further away, about 2 hours, are Salzburg and Munich. Those names speak 'for itself'. On the Czech side, you can visit the beautiful city of Cesky Krumlov, much less well known than Prague (which, by the way, is less than 200 km away) but according to many "even more beautiful". Click here to find out more about this beautiful town on the Vltava (Moldau) River.
Throughout the summer season (May-September) everywhere in region the annual 'Heimatfeste' take place. Every weekend there is something to do anywhere nearby. And of course: tourists are more than welcome! You will experience a lot of traditional Bavarian festivities and customs. This make this region unique in Europe!
The location close to a number of large German and Austrian cities, but also the still very cheap Czech Republic, make this region to a shopper's paradise. The old inner cities have, in addition to the regular stores, also many small shops and boutiques where you can buy a lot of great things that are typical for of this region. Of course there are, as elsewhere in Europe, many large shopping malls. Please note that the stores, with a few exceptions, are closed on Sundays and, in the inner cities and villages, often also on Saturday afternoon.
To be honest: that is no longer the case. But what is undeniably true: it is a beautiful river with an equally beautiful surrounding landscape. From Passau and Deggendorf many ships leave for short trips (several hours) to two-week river cruises. But with a day trip to the beautiful Danube Gorge (just east of Passau) you do have the 'cream' of the Danube. One of the real highlights with the whole family (or romantic as a couple) to do so. Prefer with the car? That is also possible.
